Google’s Street Smart: "360°Streetscapes"
Google Maps is now featuring Street View portraying block-by-block photographs simulating a virtual walking experience:
“Explore neighborhoods at street level–virtually”.
“View street level photographs (select cities)”
“Take virtual walks; pan, rotate and zoom”
“Explore cityscapes, landmarks, points of interest”
“Find shops, restaurants, parks, hotels and more”
Google’s Street Smart leverages augmented reality, superimposing icons and driving directions on actual street images and letting you preview routes in advance to your trip. Once on the road, it becomes easier to identify landmarks which might be of help when making turns.
Google is currently licensing imagery from Immersive Media as well as having its own crew driving around in a minivan taking pictures which are, on average, spaced about 10 meters each (33 feet).
