LG’s Innovation Recipe
“The success secrets of Toyota Motors have spread to LG Electronics, with executives and union members of the Korean firm going to Japan to learn from the Japanese automaker. Now Toyota is the one seeking to learn from LG, as executives of the automaker have visited the Korean company twice in a rare move.”

LG talks about innovation being the constant pursuit of improvements and reforms, showing a focus on quality management on the company’s corporate site, e.g. Six Sigma and a program known as Super A. That page also shows a reference to Technology Leadership 2005, which I was able to track back to LG’s 1999 annual report. LT 2005 relates to the company’s investments in the kind of R&D expected to deliver flagship products for the Internet and mobile communications.

What caught my attention this morning was the Donga’s article discussing productivity improvements driven by ideas generated by LG’s own employees. They focus on production processes and quality management. Additionally, LG launched the design “innovation challenge” earlier in the year. This competition is a kind of crowdsourcing initiative aimed to gather new and unique phone concepts. A panel shortlisted the best designs based on:
- need fulfillment
- creativity and innovation
- feasibility
